The County of Elgin is looking for a Full-Time Prosecutor to join our Legal Services Department. Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, the Prosecutor is responsible for prosecutions in the St. Thomas Provincial Offences Court (Parts I, II, and III, pursuant to the Provincial Offenses Act).

Summary of Work Performed:

  • Primary responsibility for prosecution of charges within Provincial Offences Court and related appeals.
  • Performs pre-trial consultations with enforcement agencies
  • Maintains and updates the status of prosecutions within the Courts Administration Management System (CAMS)
  • Receives, reviews, and vet disclosure from enforcement agencies and provide it to defendants, legal counsel and/or representatives while ensuring maintenance of all internal records for such activities
  • Conducts early resolution meetings with defendants, legal counsel and/or representatives
  • Responsible for the carriage of, preparation for, appearance upon motions and trials in St. Thomas Provincial Offences Court and/or attendance upon appeals pursuant to the Provincial Offences Act
  • Represents the County in pursuit of delinquent accounts for unpaid fines
  • Other duties as assigned

What do you bring?


  • Possess a college diploma in paralegal studies or equivalent.
  • Membership in good standing as a Licensee with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Prosecutorial experience required (1 to 3 years preferred).
  • Working knowledge of and ability to interpret and use statutes and regulations impacting municipalities including, but not limited to: Municipal Act, Provincial Offences Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, Cannabis Act, Evidence Act, Legislation Act, Fire Code, Building Code Act, Building Code, Highway Traffic Act and Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
  • Proven professional communication skills, both in writing and orally, to present complex legal information to audiences at different skill levels.
  • Ability to perform under strict time demands and deadlines while adjusting priorities amongst multiple files is essential.
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization and to participate as an effective team member is necessary.
  • Applied skills for computer programs, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, are required.
