Electrical Engineer – Truro Sawmill

Location: Truro, Nova Scotia


Job Type: Full-Time On-Site

Base salary up to $130,000 CAD depending upon experience.



Dayshift: Monday – Friday. 9am – 5pm

A leading industrial operation in Truro, NS is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join its dynamic sawmill team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys technical problem-solving, values hands-on leadership, and is ready to contribute to both day-to-day operations and longer-term capital projects. The plant has recently completed a major moderrnization, significantly increasing efficiency and productivity. Key equipment was replaced with advanced technology, improving log recovery, speed, and safety. Upgrades include a new planner, enhanced trimmer/sorter line, and an automated wrapper, positioning the plant as a more advanced and competitive operation.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead and execute electrical, instrumentation, and automation projects, working cross-functionally with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to electrical systems and processes to support operational and strategic goals.
  • Develop and present capital project proposals including scope, technical details, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Design, specify, and oversee the installation of electrical systems including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motors, and control systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues and provide subject matter expertise for plant power distribution and lockout procedures.
  • Support equipment commissioning and start-up; provide field support during construction and system integration.
  • Oversee internal and external electrical inspections; manage planning and scheduling for the electrical team.
  • Act as the primary plant contact for the local electrical utility.
  • Work closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure reliability and compliance of all electrical infrastructure.
  • Lead and support energy efficiency initiatives from idea through implementation.
  • Ensure safety standards and documentation are maintained in line with plant KPIs.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in heavy industrial environments and/or field construction
  • Proven experience with electrical systems, instrumentation, and automation technologies (e.g. VFDs, PLCs, SCADA, MCCs, Allen Bradley, Schneider)
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to balance technical detail with practical field execution
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams
  • A proactive mindset with strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
